How to Wash Pillows

A frequently asked question around Clean Laundry is “Can I wash my pillows?” The answer is yes!

If your pillows have stains, start to smell, or if they haven’t been washed in a while, then it’s definitely time to give them a wash. However, your pillows only need to be washed 2-3 times a year. That’s not asking too much, right?

Although washing pillows is unfamiliar territory to most, it is a very simple task. The first thing is just to simply check the care label on the pillows and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. That tag tells you what the pillows are made of, and that’s very important to know considering certain kinds of pillows shouldn’t be machine-washed.

Most pillows (poly-filled, or feather-filled) can be machine-washed on the gentle cycle. It’s good to wash more than one pillow at a time or throw in some towels to balance the load. Only a small amount of detergent is necessary. For poly and feather filled pillows, use the air cycle and dry thoroughly because dampness left in a pillow can lead to mold. It’s important to make sure pillows are completely dry. If you have a foam-filled pillow. it is best to hand wash and leave to air-dry. The heat from the dryer tends to make the foam crumble apart.

By doing these simple steps and adding just a little extra care, your pillows will be fresh again!
